1. Define the WHY carefully
There are several WHYs that must be answered before starting your
biz. Unless you establish the reasons and purpose for the
business then it is better not to start at all. Making more
money or working for self might be part of the reason but that may
not be strong enough.
2. Are you cut out to be an entrepreneur?
There are certain qualities that a potentially successful should
have. Many have taken the plunge only to realize that they
were not cut out to be a business owner. The demands and
pressure is so much higher.
3. Alignment of passion, skill and revenue generator
One should not be without the other. The integration of
passion, skill and revenue generator will give you a higher chance
of success. The failure to integrate the three may still give
a certain level of success but it will never allow you to reach
maximum potential.
4. Boxing or Basketball (what kind of team)
Nobody can do it alone. We all need a team to help us
accomplish greater tasks. There are 2 models: (1) the boxer
who is alone in the ring but has the support of coaches, cut men
and trainers or, (2) the basketball team where there are many
players with coaches. Would you rather be on your own or do
you feel better with a team.
5. Segment/s on target...
Which segment or segments do you want to serve? If you are
not clear and you are planning on targeting everyone then you will
never dominate in any segment. Define your segment well, know
them well, and then target them.
6. What are you selling anyway?
Product or service? Choose what suits you but make sure that
quality is guaranteed. Why sell your product or your service
if you are not confident of its quality? If you cannot
deliver what you intend to promise, forget it!
7. What's the difference?
Oh no! It's just like the other company's product. Do you
actually intend to compete with established brands? The
strategic way is to NOT compete by showing how better you are but
rather, compete by showing how different you are.
8. Magnetize then sell
The best products or services are those that people are drawn
to. Draw them first then do the sales talk. Doing
the sales talk without drawing them first is like pumping water
from an old manual water pump. Drawing them effectively then
throwing your sales pitch is like opening the faucet.
9. Who is the real boss anyway?
The real boss is the one who pays for the salaries of the
employees, including the boss. Huh? Yes, the customer is the
real boss. It is the customer who pays for everything in the
business.
10. The numbers must match
Some of us wish that we would never have to oversee this boring
stuff. No can do! Budget, inventory, collection,
accounting and finance are all important. Let us remember
this that if it does not work on paper, it will not work in
practice.
11. Legal matters
Failure of compliance to any government institution will cost you -
sometimes dearly. Failure to double check contracts and
agreements will also cost you dearly. We need to be aware of
the different compliances and we need to hire a lawyer to
double-check all contracts.
12. Never stop learning
Winners never stop learning! While we must treasure the
wisdom of the ancients, we must also keep abreast with the
knowledge of today. Times are changing fast and unless we
keep up with it, we will become obsolete, the products and services
follow.
